Annual General Meeting and Convention 2010

The Cape Breton Island Hoppers Volkssport Club (CBIH) has taken up the exciting task to host the 2010 Annual General Meeting and Convention. As the Chairperson for the 2010 Convention and AGM I would like to take this opportunity to invite all volkssporters from across Canada, the USA and around the world to join us on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia from 28-30 May, 2010 for a fun filled weekend of walking for Fun, Fitness and Friendship.

The convention will take place on one of the most beautiful and friendliest islands in the world according to Leisure Magazine and National Geographic Travel and I know you will agree once you are here. Cape Breton Island is an exciting place to visit at anytime of the year, there are excellent beaches, exciting and wonderful scenery in all parts of the island. There is whale watching and tourist attractions for everyone. The largest reconstruction of an historical site in North America is located here in Cape Breton at Fortress Louisbourg only 30 minutes from downtown Sydney in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. From the Highlands National Park in the northern part of the island and the world famous roadway the Cabot Trail, the Cape Breton Miners Museum in Glace Bay, the historical north end Sydney where our convention will take place, you are in for an exciting experience when visiting our island.

Le Cape Breton Island Hoppers Volkssport Club (CBIH) a entrepris la tâche excitante d’accueillir l’Assemblée Générale Annuelle et le Congrès en 2010. En tant que Présidente du Congrès et de l’AGA 2010, j’aimerais inviter tous les membres des clubs Volkssport du Canada, des Etats-Unis et du reste du monde à se joindre à nous, sur l’Île du Cap Breton, du 28 au 30 mai 2010, pour des randonnées pédestres permettant de s’amuser, d’être en bonne forme physique et de cultiver l’amitié.

 

Le congrès se tiendra sur l’une des plus belles îles du monde et l’une des plus accueillantes selon les magazines Leisure et National Geographic Travel. Je sais que vous partagerez cette opinion lorsque vous serez sur place. Le Cap Breton offre des vacances excitantes en tout temps de l’année. Les plages y sont excellentes et les paysages grandioses. On peut y faire l’observation des baleines et visiter différents lieux touristiques. La forteresse de Louisbourg, à 30 minutes du centre-ville de Sydney (Municipalité régionale du Cap Breton) est la plus grande reconstruction d’un site historique en Amérique du Nord. Vous pourrez aussi visiter le Parc National des Hautes Terres dans la partie nord de l’île, emprunter la route Cabot, réputée dans le monde entier, visiter le Musée des mineurs de Glace Bay et enfin le quartier historique dans la partie nord de Sydney où le congrès aura lieu. Tout cela constituera pour vous une expérience fascinante.

Walk Cape Breton

Volkssporters from across Canada will be coming to Cape Breton Regional Municipality - Sydney, Nova Scotia for a three day festival of walking with some of the friendliest walkers in the country. The Island Hoppers are preparing an event that soon won’t be forgotten as you walk in the historical north end of Sydney or amongst the Coxheath Hills overlooking the City of Sydney. During our convention you will have an opportunity to walk the coastline of the North Atlantic Ocean in the communities of Louisbourg, Glace Bay and North Sydney. The Year Round Event in the Village of Baddeck will take you along the Bras d’Or Lakes and through the Graham Bell Museum. In Baddeck you will get the opportunity to glimpse the great inventors’ home at Beinn Breagh and to see the lighthouse on Kidston Island. The enthusiastic lighthouse walkers will be able to achieve lighthouse stamps in Baddeck and in Louisbourg. The original site of the oldest lighthouse in Canada is located in Louisbourg and this is a great opportunity to get your stamp for this CVF walk program. The walk in Louisbourg will give the participants a chance to see the Fortress from Lighthouse Point and after your walk or before, take a day to tour the great fortress.

After the convention we have tentative plans to host a bus tour through the hiking/walking trails of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Our tour will feature some of the most spectacular views that Cape Breton or any place could offer the traveler. There will be tours through Acadian and Scottish Villages of the island and a possible tour of a coal mine that reached out under the ocean. Beaches, the ocean, the highlands and waterfalls will be a daily routine for this very special tour of our island. En randonnée au Cap Breton

 

Les adeptes des Volksports venus d’ailleurs au Canada auront l’occasion de rencontrer quelques uns des marcheurs les plus sympatiques lorsqu’ils arriveront à Sydney, dans la Municipalité Régionale du Cap Breton pour participer à un festival de randonnées pédestres d’une durée de trois jours. Les Island Hoppers sont à préparer un événement que vous n’oublierez pas facilement après avoir marché dans le quartier historique nord de Sydney ou dans les collines de Coxheath qui dominent la ville. Le congrès vous permettra de marcher le long du littoral atlantique dans les villes de Louisbourg, Glace Bay et North Sydney. Le circuit de marche continuelle à Baddeck vous donnera l’occasion de longer les rives du lac Bras d’Or et d’entrer au musée Alexander Bell. À Baddeck, vous pourrez visiter la maison du grand inventeur, Beinn Breagh, et de voir le phare de l’île Kidston. Les randonneurs qui visiteront les phares à Baddeck et à Louisbourg pourront y faire estampiller leurs livrets. Louisbourg est le site du plus ancien phare au Canada. C’est donc l’endroit idéal pour recevoir l’estampille sanctionnant cette marche de la FCV. La marche dans Louisbourg permettra aux participants la chance de voir la forteresse depuis la pointe du phare. Avant ou après cette marche, il est recommandé de passer une journée dans la forteresse.

 

Nous essayons présentement d’organiser un circuit en autocar pour faire des randonnées pédestres dans le Parc national des Haute Terres du Cap Breton après le congrès. Ce circuit vous fera voir des panoramas parmi les plus spectaculaires du Cap Breton et d’ailleurs. Vous aurez l’occasion de visiter des villages acadiens et écossais et peut-être une mine de charbon en partie située sous l’océan. Plages, océan, hautes terres et cascades seront au menu quotidien de ce circuit autour de l’île. Nous vous donnerons plus de détails sur ce circuit un peu plus tard.
